In the main hall of the castle, Otello awaits for the arrival of Lodovico, the Venetian ambassador. Iago reminds Otello about the handkerchief and walks away. Desdemona enters attempting and attempts to speak on Cassio’s behalf one more time. But Otello demands to see the handkerchief. Desdemona does not have it, so he accuses her of infidelity. Despairing from such false doubts, Desdemona reacts by praying for him. Nevertheless, he continues to insult her and kicks her out of the room.

Iago returns and tells Otello to hide in the terrace. He leads Cassio into describing a recent dalliance he’s had with a courtesan named Bianca. Otello thinks Cassio is describing a night with Desdemona. Iago passes the handkerchief to Cassio and Otello sees it. As trumpets announce the arrival of the Venetian ambassadors. Otello and Iago discuss what method of punishment is appropriate for Desdemona. They agree on a quiet strangulation while she’s in bed. Otello promotes Iago to captain.

When the Venetian dignitaries make their entrance, Lodovico gives Otello a letter announcing that he has been recalled to Venice. Unwillingly, Cassio will be appointed to take Otello’s duties, but Iago assures him that he will reassign that task to Roderigo. Iago counsels Roderigo to murder Cassio. He demands everyone, other than Iago, to leave. Ultimately, Otello mumbles incoherently before fainting. Iago stands over him, mocking him with a disturbing evil grin facial expression.
